UPDATE ON NEW CONSTRUCTION KIRS 17.5 8+ - JANUARY 2009

Due to competition in the New Zealand market KIRS have now made the step of making the eight hulls stronger and stiffer. We have been slightly lacking in the strength of the boat to be able to handle the wing riggers. The new construction methods are showing that this boat will be what is needed to bridge this gap.

At present, our eights have been built using a 241gram per square meter carbon both external and internal layers with a 5mm, 29gm/sq meter Aerospace grade Nomex honeycomb sandwich construction.

The new construction has seen us use a 241 on the outer hull, a 12mm, 49gm/sq m nomex on the washboards, tapering under the deck to a 5mm on the bottom of the hull. The interior laminate is now a kevlar foot bay with a 340gm/sq m carbon on the washboards, and a 475gm/sq m 100m wide uni directional carbon down the centreline of the boat. We have opted for a carbon finish of 241gm/sq m on the deck to make the whole boat have a nice clear coat finish on the interior.

We have used a horizontal bulkhead under the deck to provide more horizontal strength in the boat.

Currently, we see the boat at 95.5kg, leaving the factory. So we are very happy with this outcome. The main reason for the kevlar was to substitute for other weight gain of the carbon along the washboard.

We have lost weight also in the bulkhead join by using a high density foam, similar to the use on fibreglass boats for bolting outboard motors to. This has saved weight and will be stronger than present construction.

The finish on the boat has come up really well and we are happy with the outcome. We are using Rigtec engineering fittings for both foot systems and riggers which we have found to be very suitable for NZ requirements. There is continuing development for carbon riggers but this will be 6-12months or further before production and use of these.

This construction will be used on specific orders. It is not currently in full production as a costing is not yet finally determined for this. We will be looking into developing a similar style for our 4x+-‘s as well. Please email info@kirsuk.co.uk
if you want any further information or pictures.
